本仕様は，Physical Interfaces & Carriers Global Technical Committeeで技術的に承認されたもので，European Equipment Automation Committeeが直接責任を負うものである。現版は2001年4月24日にEuropean Regional Standards Committeeにて承認された。2001年8月にまずwww.semi.orgで入手可能になり，2001年11月発行に至る。初版は1995年発行，前版は2001年7月発行。

　

本仕様の目的は，単一もしくは多数のポートを持ったツールに，SMIFの統合を可能にするために，ツール内に必要とする空間を用意することである。

　

本仕様は，インタフェース面に関してツール内に必要なスペースを定義する。この仕様は，標準メカニカルインタフェース (SMIF) スタンダード，SEMI E19に言及する。
