Abstract
本スタンダードは，global Physical Interfaces & Carriers Technical Committeeで技術的に承認されている。現版は2011年12月24日，global Audits and Reviews Subcommitteeにて発行が承認された。2012年5月にwww.semiviews.orgおよび www.semi.orgで入手可能となる。初版は1997年発行。前版は2006年11月発行。

本スタンダードは，プロセス装置または測定装置とフロントオープニング・ボックスとのインタフェースについて装置側の要求事項について規定する。
本スタンダードが意図しているのは，すべてのメカニカルインタフェースにおいて，モジュール性と互換性を確保しながら，技術革新を妨げないよう最小レベルの仕様を定めることである。物理的インタフェースだけが規定されており，材料に対する要求事項やパーティクルなどの汚染限度は示されていない。本スタンダードに規定されたインタフェースは，密閉されたミニエンバイロメント用途を意図しているが，単にうまく設計された自動化インタフェースであるとの解釈でも構わない。
