本仕様の目的は，450 mm用 FOUPおよび450 mm用 MACのロードおよびアンロードを行う半導体製造装置 (SME) におけるロードポートの基本的な寸法のインタフェースを定義することである。 本書の意図は，革新的なソリューションを限定することなくロードポートとキャリアの相互運用性を確保するための一連の要求および機能を定義するものである。
本書のインタフェース仕様は，関連する450 mm FOUPおよび450 mm MACのSEMIスタンダードに準拠するキャリアによって決定され，また，キャリアに適合するように作成されている。
ロードおよびアンロードは，何らかのシステムまたは装置（人が運転する搬送車または高架ホイスト車など）を使って半自動および自動モードで行われることを想定している。
