本スタンダードは，Silicon Wafer Global Technical Committeeで技術的に承認されている。現版は2008年5月3日，global Audits and Reviews Subcommitteeにて発行が承認された。2008年6月にwww.semi.orgで。初版は1998年発行，前版は2007年3月に発行された。

本スタンダードは，ウェーハの品質を維持しながら，ウェーハサプライヤから顧客（主にIC製造者）へ300 mm径ウェーハを搬送するのに使用されるフロントオープニングシッピングボックス (front-opening shipping Box: FOSB) を規定する。

本スタンダードが意図しているのは，すべてのメカニカルインタフェースにおいて，モジュール性と互換性を確保しながら，技術革新を妨げないよう最小レベルの仕様を定めることである。しかしながら，射出成型プラスチック製のFOSBが本スタンダードに準拠して製造できるように，そしてそのFOSBがウェーハ輸送，ドアの開閉時においてウェーハ品質を維持するために使用可能なように，本スタンダードは作成されている。

本スタンダードが想定しているのは，FOSBがウェーハ製造の最終段階でウェーハが詰められ，受け入れと検査を経て，IC工場内でFOSBからFOUP，FOBITあるいはオープンカセットに詰めかえられるまでの工程に使われることであり，IC工場内のプロセス工程で使うことは想定していない。ウェーハは自動化された装置によってFOSBからFOUP，FOBITあるいはオープンカセットに詰め替えられることが望ましい。¶ 5.4に記載のように，購入者側はFOSBのドアを以下のいずれであるかを規定する必要がある。

  1. ¶ 5.4.1記載の手動操作用ドア

  2. ¶ 5.4.2記載の自動開閉用ドア
